Favorable policies boost HK tech stocks; Hang Seng Tech Index surges over 3%
Favorable policies drive strong rebound in HK tech stocks
On July 28, 2026, Hong Kong stocks saw a long-awaited strong rebound. The Hang Seng Tech Index opened high and rallied throughout the day, closing up 3.2% at 4,850 points, its biggest single-day gain in nearly a month. The Hang Seng Index followed, rising 1.8% to reclaim the 28,000 point mark. Tech stocks surged across the board, with consumer electronics, internet platforms, and cloud computing leading gains. Trading was active, with turnover up nearly 40% from the previous session.
Policy catalyst: platform economy gets renewed support
On the news front, the State Council issued the "Opinions on Promoting the Standardized and Healthy Development of the Platform Economy," which explicitly encourages platform enterprises to innovate, lower market entry barriers while maintaining compliance, and increase policy support for fintech and cross-border trade. This heavyweight document is seen as a major positive for the platform economy, directly fueling bullish sentiment on tech stocks. Additionally, market rumors that several top internet companies are about to announce better-than-expected Q2 earnings further strengthened capital's willingness to allocate to tech leaders.
Tech giants lead gains; Tencent, Meituan, Alibaba up over 4%
Among individual stocks, Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) rose 4.5% to HK$480, with turnover exceeding HK$15 billion, a new high for the year. Sources said Tencent's WeChat Video Channel commercialization is accelerating, and ad revenue may beat expectations. Meituan (3690.HK) rose 4.8%, benefiting from recovery in local life service demand and narrowing losses in new businesses. Alibaba (9988.HK) rose 4.1%, as the company announced an additional RMB 20 billion investment in cloud computing and AI, boosting market confidence. JD.com (9618.HK) and NetEase (9999.HK) also rose over 3%.
Consumer electronics sector moves; Apple supply chain rises
Beyond internet giants, the consumer electronics sector became a focus for capital today. Driven by expectations of Apple's upcoming new iPhone series in September, Sunny Optical Technology (2382.HK) surged 5.3%, AAC Technologies (2018.HK) rose 4.6%, and Gaowei Electronics (1415.HK) gained 6.1%. Analysts noted that the Apple supply chain has full orders, and some suppliers have begun preparing for the second-generation Vision Pro, suggesting a significant improvement in supply chain earnings in Q3.
Southbound capital buys heavily; net inflow exceeds HK$10 billion
On the capital front, Southbound funds recorded a net purchase of HK$11.5 billion today, the highest in nearly three months. Tencent, Meituan, and Xiaomi Group (1810.HK) received net buys of HK$2.5 billion, HK$1.8 billion, and HK$1.2 billion, respectively. Domestic institutions believe that HK tech stocks are undervalued near historical lows, and with a marginal easing of policies, allocation cost-performance is prominent. On the foreign side, northbound capital also net bought about RMB 5 billion in A-shares, indicating revived global interest in Chinese assets.
Outlook: Can the rebound last?
Market analysts pointed out that today's strong performance of HK tech stocks is the result of a confluence of policy, capital, and fundamental expectations. In the short term, if the upcoming earnings season validates profit growth, combined with easing expectations of Fed rate hikes, HK stocks could see a valuation recovery rally. However, investors should still monitor geopolitical risks and global liquidity changes, and are advised to buy industry leaders on dips and avoid chasing speculative stocks.
By the close, only 2 of the Hang Seng Tech Index constituents fell, while 48 rose, with market sentiment turning optimistic. The industry generally believes that today's rebound marks a turning point for the HK tech sector, and the subsequent trend is worth watching.
