Hang Seng Index rebounds to 20,500 as tech and consumer leaders rally in afternoon; southbound net buying exceeds HK$11 billion
Hang Seng Index Surges in Afternoon to Reclaim 20,500
On August 7, the Hong Kong market saw a notable rebound after three days of consolidation. The Hang Seng Index opened slightly lower and briefly dipped near 20,200, but rallied in the afternoon as southbound funds accelerated and heavyweight tech stocks surged. The index closed up 1.8% at 20,520, reclaiming the 20,500 mark. The Hang Seng Tech Index performed even stronger, up 2.4% to 4,680. The HSCEI also rose 1.6%.
Tech and consumer leaders led the gains. Tencent surged in the afternoon, up 3.2% to above HK$420. Meituan rose 3.5% on consumer recovery hopes, while Alibaba-SW gained 1.8%. In consumer, Anta Sports rose 2.1%, Li Ning 1.9%, and China Resources Beer 2.3%, reflecting growing confidence in a second-half consumption recovery.
Southbound Funds Keep Buying; Daily Net Inflow Tops HK$11 Billion
Data shows southbound net buying reached HK$11.24 billion, up over 40% from the previous session. The Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect saw HK$5.87 billion in net buying, while the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect saw HK$5.37 billion. This marks the eighth consecutive session of net inflows, with cumulative net buying exceeding HK$60 billion.
Tencent, Meituan-W, and CNOOC were the top three buys, with net inflows of HK$2.13 billion, HK$1.56 billion, and HK$1.02 billion respectively. Analysts say sustained southbound inflows reflect mainland investors' recognition of current valuations, alongside a stabilizing yuan and ongoing enhancements to the Connect schemes.
Multiple Catalysts Align; Valuation Repair Rally Expected
Multiple positive factors are converging behind this rebound. First, domestic policy continues to signal support. A recent State Council executive meeting reiterated expanding domestic demand and boosting consumption, improving earnings outlooks for consumer firms. Second, rising expectations for Fed rate cuts and a looser global liquidity environment are aiding risk appetite recovery in Hong Kong stocks.
CICC's latest report notes the Hang Seng Index's forward P/E is about 10.2x, still relatively low over the past five years. Driven by policy catalysts and earnings validation, Hong Kong stocks could see a valuation repair rally. The firm suggests focusing on two themes: tech leaders like Tencent and Alibaba with significant valuation repair potential, and consumer leaders poised to benefit from the consumption recovery.
However, some institutions caution about short-term volatility risks. An analyst at Everbright Securities International says that while market sentiment has clearly improved, external uncertainties remain, including geopolitical developments and global inflation trends. Investors are advised to remain moderately cautious when participating in the rebound and focus on individual stock fundamentals.
Sector Rotation Accelerates; Focus on Earnings Delivery Window
Sector rotation was evident today. Besides tech and consumer leading, the pharmaceutical sector was also active. WuXi Biologics rose over 3%, BeiGene gained 2.6%, and Innovent Biologics added 2.2%. Analysts believe that better-than-expected interim earnings previews from several pharmaceutical firms, combined with an improving policy environment for innovative drugs, are prompting a market reassessment of the sector's investment value.
Looking ahead, most institutions expect Hong Kong stocks to maintain a range-bound to slightly bullish pattern in the near term. As the mid-August interim earnings season peaks, stocks with earnings surprises could attract capital. Meanwhile, policy dividends such as the expansion of Stock Connect and enhancements to the Connect schemes will continue to inject liquidity into the Hong Kong market. For retail investors, the current juncture may offer a decent window to accumulate quality Hong Kong assets on dips.
