HK new energy vehicle industry chain surges across the board, lithium battery material stocks lead gains; institutions bullish on H2 prosperity
On the first trading day of August, the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry chain in the Hong Kong stock market exploded across the board, with lithium battery materials, vehicle manufacturing, charging facilities and other sub-tracks strengthening collectively, becoming the most eye-catching focus of the day. By the close, the Hang Seng Index edged up 0.42%, but NEV-related stocks generally recorded gains of 3% to 8%, and several lithium battery material stocks hit new highs for the year.
Lithium Battery Material Stocks Lead Gains; Industry Chain Blossoms Across Multiple Points
On the market, the lithium battery materials sector performed the most prominently. Among them, a leading cathode material supplier surged 8.2%, while the separator leader and electrolyte companies both rose over 5%. On the news front, July domestic NEV sales data exceeded expectations. According to preliminary statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the NEV retail penetration rate exceeded 55% for the first time in July, significantly boosting expectations for upstream material demand.
Meanwhile, the vehicle segment also performed strongly, with several new car-making forces' Hong Kong-listed stocks rising over 4%. Charging pile concept stocks were driven by policy tailwinds and also received capital favor. Market insiders said the rise in the NEV industry chain was not an isolated event but based on dual support from fundamentals and policy.
Sales Data Beat Expectations; Industry Prosperity Continues to Rise
The recently released July NEV production and sales data became the direct catalyst for the market outbreak. Data show that domestic NEV wholesale sales in July are expected to reach 1.05 million units, up 38% year-on-year and 7% month-on-month, far exceeding market expectations. Among them, plug-in hybrid models grew particularly rapidly, with a year-on-year increase of over 60%.
Good news also came from the export side, with NEV exports rising 45% year-on-year in July, with Southeast Asian and European markets becoming the main sources of increment. This series of data shows that the growth momentum of the NEV industry remains strong, and the earnings delivery capability of upstream and downstream enterprises in the industry chain is expected to continue to strengthen.
Policy Intensifies; Infrastructure and Consumption as Twin Engines
Policy-level benefits also injected a shot in the arm for the sector. Recently, the State Council executive meeting reviewed and approved the 'Several Measures to Further Promote the High-Quality Development of the New Energy Vehicle Industry', clearly proposing multiple support measures such as accelerating charging infrastructure construction, optimizing purchase tax reduction policies, and promoting full electrification of public sector vehicles. Among them, details such as building more fast-charging piles in rural areas and promoting the renovation of charging facilities in old residential communities are particularly noteworthy.
In addition, local governments are also intensively introducing stimulus policies. Guangdong Province announced that it will continue to implement NEV trade-in subsidies in the second half of 2026, with a maximum subsidy of 15,000 yuan; Shanghai will grant additional road-rights preferential treatment to battery-swap vehicles. Institutional analysis believes that the twin-engine drive of "infrastructure + consumption" on the policy side is expected to help annual NEV sales exceed 12 million units.
Institutional View: High Prosperity Continues; Focus on Structural Opportunities
Multiple brokerages expressed optimism about the NEV industry chain in their latest research reports. A large brokerage said that the current sector valuation is still at a mid-historical level, while the industry trend continues to improve, and market performance in the second half is worth looking forward to. It suggested investors focus on leading lithium battery materials companies with cost and technology advantages, as well as export chain opportunities brought by rising overseas penetration.
Another international investment bank pointed out that lithium battery material prices have recently stabilized and rebounded, coupled with increased capacity utilization, and related companies' third-quarter earnings are expected to improve significantly quarter-on-quarter. The institution gave the lithium battery materials sector an "overweight" rating and expects lithium carbonate prices to maintain a moderate upward trend in the medium term.
However, some analysts reminded that competition in the NEV industry is intensifying, and structural overcapacity has emerged in some segments. Investors need to select stocks carefully and avoid blindly chasing highs. From the perspective of capital flows, southbound capital net bought more than HK$3 billion in NEV-related stocks on that day, showing that domestic capital's preference for the sector has significantly increased.
Outlook: Grasp Two Main Investment Lines
Looking ahead to the second half, the market generally believes that the NEV industry chain will maintain high prosperity. Investment lines can focus on two aspects: first, next-generation battery materials benefiting from technological iteration, such as solid-state batteries and silicon-carbon anodes; second, incremental demand brought by overseas market expansion, especially in charging piles and energy storage supporting fields.
In the Hong Kong stock market, there are many targets related to the NEV industry chain, covering upstream lithium mining, midstream materials, downstream vehicles and charging operations. Investors can focus on quality targets with matching valuation and growth based on their own risk preferences.
Overall, today's outbreak in the NEV industry chain is not accidental, but the result of resonance among fundamentals, policy, and capital. As industry demand continues to be released and policy dividends gradually land, the sector's medium- and long-term investment value remains obvious. Hong Kong stock investors may want to keep tracking and seize opportunities to position on pullbacks.
