Fed 2026 Rate Hike Expectations Rise; Warsh Abstention Draws Attention
Topic: Fed holds rates steady, streamlines statement to remove easing bias

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh arrived at a press conference in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 2026.
The Fed's latest economic projections suggest one rate hike in 2026, but the outlook is complicated by the absence of a projection from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.
Among 18 officials, 9 expect the federal funds rate to be above the current range of 3.5% to 3.75% by end-2026. However, one participant's data appeared to be missing, and Warsh confirmed at the press conference that he did not provide any personal projection.
Currently, the median rate projection shows the federal funds rate reaching 3.8% by end-2026. That figure is higher than the 3.4% from the March Summary of Economic Projections, and 0.25 percentage points above the current target range.
Warsh, who just assumed the Fed chairmanship, has signaled a desire to overhaul the central bank's communication strategy. He believes officials may have provided too much forward guidance and devoted too much effort to mapping out future monetary policy paths.
Meanwhile, the Fed's policy statement also underwent more extensive rewriting than usual. In recent years, statement changes were typically limited to a few words or sentences, but Wednesday's statement was significantly shortened.
